The year is 2003.

The construction site is busy. Landscaping equipment is sculpting the ground. A series of ponds emerge as huge boulders line the perimeters. The ponds beautify the property and act as part of the “Storm Water Management Plan”. The landscaping plan still calls for trees, shrubs, and grass to enhance the view in front of the patient rooms overlooking the ponds.

Meanwhile, inside the structure the sound of hammers, drills, metal and wood saws, and machines tells us that a lot is going on. Drywall installation continues. Finishing work is evident in the Lab, Emergency and ICU. Painters are advancing on levels two and three. Acoustic ceiling tiles dampen the sound a little. The huge stately wood pillars are beautiful. Millwork refines each room, as well.

Doors are being installed in the patient pods. Now the long corridors can be “closed off” to traffic. The main nursing stations on level three are nearing completion. The new flooring gives the unit a “finished look”. No rides on the elevators yet; that project will take a few months to complete.

Over in the Laundry Department, the huge computer-automated washers and dryers are going in. The equipment is programmed to wash and cycle the load to a conveyor belt which automatically dumps the load into dryers. It is a significant technical advancement. Nearby, the wood framing for the Cancer Bunker skylights is beginning. Skylights for a Cancer Bunker are a first for Canada.

Many people have taken a tour of the site. Support for the project continues to grow.

The snapshots you see portray the stage of progress two years ago this week.

Our patients were moved to the new TBRHSC less than one year ago from the Port Arthur and McKellar sites of Thunder Bay Regional Hospital.
