The year is 2001.
Construction of the new hospital continues. A lot has been
accomplished in a short period of time. The property has been
scarified, steel pilings driven down to the bedrock, reinforced
concrete caps laid over the pilings, and the rest of the concrete
footing prepared to receive the building. The steel frame
is being assembled like a giant mechano set. Each piece is
prefabricated and then hoisted into place. The bolts, welds
and steel grid secures the steel structure once high tension
cables are tightened to ensure the structure is properly “tuned”.
The building is constructed along a footprint with the patient
pods the first areas to be erected. The building is clad as
soon as possible to minimize the effects of winter on the
workers. The construction strategy works well as functional
design permits the project planners to develop a planned work
environment for the staff. Daily, construction companies move
equipment and staff to the site. The dream of building a new
hospital is elevated from a vision to a reality.
The snapshots you see portray the stage of progress four
years ago this week.
Our patients were moved to the new TBRHSC less than one year
ago from the Port Arthur and McKellar sites of Thunder Bay
Regional Hospital.
Our celebration continues next week.
