This
afternoon, in a fire hall filled with over 400 Grade 7 and
8 students from Bishop Gallagher School, the Thunder Bay Professional
Fire Fighters Association (TBPFFA) presented Regional Cancer
Care with an autographed Lance Armstrong Tour de France podium
jersey. The presentation included a video featuring clips
of Lance Armstrong and seven cancer survivors from Thunder
Bay who shared their Live Strong stories. The Yellow Jersey
will be displayed in the main reception area of the cancer
centre in a wall mounted presentation case commissioned by
the cancer centre. Michael Power, TBRHSC VP Regional Cancer
& Diagnostic Services, accepted the jersey on behalf of
the cancer centre as a symbol of hope, courage, inspiration
and survivorship for cancer patients, survivors and their
families.
Lance Armstrong, a United States Postal Service and Discovery Channel racing
team member and author overcame testicular, lung and brain cancer in 1999 to
win the Tour de France, an unprecedented seven times before retiring from
professional racing in 2005. Project Yellow Jersey is the vision of Scott
Chisholm, a local firefighter and community volunteer.
Curt Harnett, Canadian cycling Olympic medalist who was instrumental
in obtaining the jersey for the local Professional Fire Fighters
Association was also in attendance. The jersey presentation
culminated with the announcement of the winner of the TBPFFA’s
Project Yellow Jersey.
