May 11, 2009

Click to listen to this page using ReadPlease On May 11, the first day of Nursing Week, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) announced plans to enhance the quality of patient and client care by implementing a series of internationally-recognized Nursing Best Practices. The organizations were recently named ‘Best Practice Spotlight Candidates’ by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) and will partner with the Association to use the latest research evidence when caring for children, adults and seniors.

TBRHSC and TBDHU join 14 other healthcare organizations in the Province that became RNAO Spotlight Candidates in April. Over the next three years, by following recommendations found in RNAO’s Nursing Best Practice Guidelines, nursing teams at the two organizations will introduce strategies to assess and manage pain more effectively, prevent older adults from falling, help smokers quit their habit, support breastfeeding mothers, and screen women for abuse.

“Spotlight organizations play a key role in ensuring that the latest research in Nursing Practice is lifted from the page and embedded into daily Nursing Practice in healthcare facilities and organizations across the province. These guidelines give patients and the public an understanding of the quality of care they should expect to receive and could be the catalyst to achieving a more consistent, higher level of healthcare for Ontarians”, explains Irmajean Bajnok, Director of International Affairs and Best Practice Guidelines Programs at RNAO.

To date, RNAO has developed 32 Best Practices Guidelines related to clinical topics and seven guidelines related to healthy work environments for nurses. TBRHSC and TBDHU will be implementing guidelines which will have the greatest impact on the health and well-being of their patients and clients.

TBRHSC

Nurses at TBRHSC will be leading implementation projects related to the following guidelines:

  • Patient and Family Centred Care
  • Assessment and Management of Pain
  • Assessment of Device Selection for Vascular Access/Care and Maintenance to Reduce Vascular Complications
  • Integrating Smoking Cessation into Daily Nursing Practice
  • Prevention of Falls and Fall Injuries in the Older Adult

TBDHU

The following guidelines will be implemented at TBDHU:

  • Breastfeeding Best Practice Guidelines for Nurses
  • Enhancing Adolescent Development
  • Woman Abuse: Screening, Identification and Initial Response

“The RNAO Spotlight Initiative will support the ongoing commitment to excellence in Nursing Practice at TBRHSC and the other hospitals in Northwestern Ontario. TBRHSC is committed to Patient and Family Centred Care and Clinical Research and this focus on excellence in Nursing Practice will strengthen this commitment”, explains George Fieber, RN, Professional Practice Leader.

TBDHU is equally enthusiastic about the initiative. Ken Allan, RN, Director of Health Protection at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit states, “This is a tremendous opportunity to support Professional Nursing Practice and enhance the quality of service being delivered to communities across the region through delivery and evaluation of Best Practice Guidelines. We are pleased that we will be able to contribute to the body of knowledge for evidence-based practice in a public health setting.
