Thunder
Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre has entered into a strategic
partnership with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute
(OHI) to assist TBRHSC with its Coronary Angioplasty Program.
Since the University of Ottawa Heart Institute is recognized
as the premiere deliverer of cardiac services in Canada, this
partnership launches TBRHSC into an elite group of cardiac
healthcare providers with respect to both clinical and research
strategies.
The University of Ottawa Heart Institute will initially assist
TBRHSC with its application to the Ministry of Health and
Long Term Care to gain approval for the standalone coronary
angioplasty suite and related services.

Ron Nelson, Chair of the
TBRHSC Board of Directors, commented that, “This
partnership with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute
could not come at a more opportune time. With Ottawa,
we immediately become a partner with Canada’s
best. That obviously greatly impacts our vision for
quality patient care. We know that our capacity for
teaching and research will be enhanced as our organization
is transformed to accommodate the new service. Furthermore,
we will offer our cardiac patients living in the region
fabulous, timely, service. The quality of our patient
care will be better than it has ever been. That is exciting
news for everyone”. |
 |
Lori Marshall, Senior
Vice-president of Patient Care Services at TBRHSC states,
“With the University of Ottawa Heart Institute
having such respect both nationally and internationally,
their desire to partner with us means that something
very special is going on in Thunder Bay. OHI is going
way beyond what would be reasonably expected from a
partner. They are excited about us. This partnership
will work for both of us. More importantly, think what
it will do for our patients needing cardiac care, especially
angioplasty”. |
Dr. Marino Labinaz, Program Director for Interventional Cardiology
at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute says, “Thunder
Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is a great fit with OHI
because TBRHSC has a vision for patient care that is extraordinary.
Every opportunity to serve the needs of patients will be met.
The partnership will benefit everyone”.

Martin McMillan is with
Mended Hearts in Thunder Bay. He speaks highly of the
University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Martin explains,
“After I had my cardiac arrest, treatment, and
subsequent tests in Thunder Bay, I received outstanding
cardiac care at the OHI”. His angioplasty, ‘the
same as anyone will get soon in Thunder Bay’,
“was offered to me quickly, and saved my life.
I had blockage in one artery in four places and was
on a lot of puffers before the procedure. Now, I don’t
need puffers at all. This partnership with OHI is really
great news for cardiac patients in that we won’t
have to wait for the call while living in another city,
and with all that expense. The benefits of care close
to home will be enormous”. |
The partnership between Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences
Centre and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute means
that one of the MOHLTC’s key components to supporting
an Angioplasty Suite for Thunder Bay – that of identifying
a ‘mentorship site’ – has been completed.
Next, the financial, architectural, and Functional Plan documents
will be forwarded to the Ministry. A decision is expected
in the near future.
