NW Region Paramedics, Firefighters, Communications
Officers & First Responders Recognized for Saving Lives
March 6, 2009
Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Base Hospital
Program (NW Region) recognized a combined total of 121 regional
Paramedics, City of Thunder Bay Firefighters, and regional
Communications Officers & First Responders for their efforts
in saving lives.
Over a one and a half-year period between August 2007 and
December 2008 there were 15 lives saved in the pre-hospital
setting in the NW region. Lives were saved in each of these
communities: Dryden, Kenora, Armstrong, Red Lake, and City
of Thunder Bay.
The successful resuscitations are the result of the collaborative
and professional efforts between paramedics, firefighters,
communications officers (EMS, Fire & Police) and first
responders in our communities. Together, these groups of professionals
improve a person’s chance for survival through training
and expertise; each group fulfills their link in the chain
of survival: Healthy Choices; Early Recognition; Early Access
(to 911); Early CPR; Early Defibrillation; Early Advanced
Life Support; Early Rehabilitation.
The NW Region Base Hospital provides medical direction, medical
oversight, continuous quality improvement, & education
for certified land ambulance paramedics. Currently, there
are over 300 paramedics in the NW region currently certified
under the NW Region Base Hospital: Approx 350 Primary Care
Paramedics & 21 Advanced Care Paramedics.
