Congratulations to everyone who supported the “Docs On Ice” event.
It was a huge success as it brought a lot of attention to our city and to TBRHSC,
in particular. A number of physicians asked to be taken on a tour with some
expressing that they would like more information about opportunities to practice
in Thunder Bay. I had the pleasure of driving some of the physicians around.
I met some new friends.
It goes without saying that we have a competitive advantage in a number of
areas when it comes to recruitment. In large measure, as the people in our city
and region work together, we are able to offer a great place to live. Of course,
we need more physicians. I am confident that some will come.
This month, we celebrate the efforts of our nurses. Annually, we designate
the month of May to express our gratitude to this valuable group of healthcare
workers. As you know, nurses are taking on more responsibility. They are expected
to be life-long learners, have inexhaustible energy, and spread good-will to
those who need to be encouraged along their healthcare journey. Personally,
a number of nurses have been there for me and my family when we needed care
personally or collectively. They have gone through the rigours of becoming nurses
and have achieved academic excellence that we want to acknowledge. So, to all
our nurses – thank you!
I want to keep you abreast of our financial situation. It is no secret that
negotiations continue with the LHIN as we seek to get a fair and equitable agreement.
Our “go-forward” budget is being carefully thought out. In the face
of significant healthcare challenges, we want to ensure that we have made appropriate
decisions. Our Board has taken the position that we cannot sign any agreement
at this time because inappropriate levels of resources would jeopardize the
provision of care for our patients. Signing now would mean that we are agreeing
to provide care with fewer resources, which would leave us in an impossible
position.
Our first reality is that we are operating at over 100% capacity. With our
inability to transfer adequate numbers of patients to other facilities, we continue
to be in crisis. We move ahead in good faith that our partners will assist us
with finding solutions to difficult problems. I commend my fellow Board of Directors
and TBRHSC Administration for “staying the course.”
On another matter – to those who have ensured that we do indeed have
a Fire Plan, thank you for taking the “high road”. Sometimes, things
get a way out of perspective. This is one of those occasions.
In summary, I want to commend our Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation
Team. They have boldly moved forward with an integrated strategy that suits
us well. I know that people will support the fund-raising efforts of the Foundation.
The issues around Teaching and Research, Organizational Transformation, Regional
Service Integration, and Quality Patient Care resonate loudly with everyone.
We are in this together. We need each other.
Thank you for your continuing support.
