OIES is an innovative, computer based learning program for
patients and families and oncology professionals. A made-in-Canada
success, the purchase of this award winning cancer education
software has been made possible with funding from the Northern
Cancer Research Foundation.

cancer site specific titles include a general and clinical
level that will be available on server based computer terminals
situated in two locations for patients and family members:
the Patient Resource Centre at Main Reception on the third
floor and in the Radiation Therapy Reception area. There are
also two clinical areas where health care professionals and
students can access the series: Oncology Outpatient Nursing
area on the 3rd floor and the Oncology Inpatient area or 1A.
Each CD contains over 20 hours of material with rich graphics,
animations and clear narration.
The series was developed by Jack Digital Productions Inc.
in collaboration with Princess Margaret Hospital and over
300 health care professionals as well as patients and family
members.
The content is designed to address a broad range of learning
styles, computer experience, abilities, literacy levels and
language skills. Some of the features include:
- 3D computer animation, diagrams of anatomy and different views
- Virtual reality graphics
- Voice over narration
- Search and print functions
- FAQ’s
- Video clips of Patient interviews
- Content is updated on biannual basis
- Internet links to credible sources
- Tracking software monitors usage
Patient Education
The series will be available for patients, family members
and visitors in two locations: the Patient Resource area located
in the cancer centre main reception area, third floor and
the Radiation Therapy waiting area. The General Level information
is developed at a grade 7 reading level and presented sequentially
in small units on easy to navigate high-speed screens.
Canadian Cancer Society Volunteers will be trained to promote
and assist patients to access the information. These volunteers
can also assist patients and family members to print content
and access the internet to link to recommended sites.

Oncology Professional Education
24/7 access will be available from computer terminals located
in clinical work spaces: oncology outpatient and inpatient
care areas.
This independent learning tool will be a key component in
the Nursing Education Pathway.
A library of individual CD’s will be available to borrow
from the Education Program. Lunch and Learn sessions as well
as professional group presentations will be provided to launch
the series. Education staff will be available to provide ongoing
support for the program.
