Ontario Government announces major investment in the
Molecular Medicine Research Centre

This morning, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
celebrated the Ontario Government’s $14.7 million
investment in the Molecular Medicine Research Centre.
MPPs Bill Mauro (Thunder Bay – Atikokan) and
Michael Gravelle (Thunder Bay – Superior North)
announced their government’s support on behalf
of the Minister of Northern Development and Mines, Rick
Bartolucci, at TBRHSC. The announcement demonstrates
the province’s commitment to research and innovation
in Northwestern Ontario.

“This funding announcement
is fabulous news,” said TBRHSC Board Chair Ron
Nelson. “Once again, we are grateful that our
healthcare partners, with the Provincial Government,
have supported our vision for healthcare. Our partnership
is collaborative with every level of government and
the private sector. It works well. Our TBRHSC Strategic
Plan ensures that we will lever this financial contribution
into something very special which will benefit us
all.”

with others,” said TBRHSC President and CEO
Ron Saddington. “We are grateful to all the
people who believed in this project. The support
has been overwhelming. Both the public and private
sectors have embraced something very special. Together,
we are making a difference in our city and region,
and beyond.”

Thunder Bay Mayor Lynn Peterson, Lakehead University President
Fred Gilbert and TBRHSC’s Vice President of Cancer and
Diagnostic Services, Michael Power, also celebrated the announcement.
“The Ontario Government’s commitment and support
for the Molecular Medicine Research Centre in Thunder Bay
has been integral to building research and innovation capacity
in Northwestern Ontario. Funding is in place, the facility
nears completion and the first researchers will be appointed
in a matter of weeks. Things are moving at full steam,”
Power said.
The provincial funding - $5 million through the Northern
Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) with the balance
coming from the Ministries of Research and Innovation and
Northern Development and Mines – will be used for administrative
costs, equipment acquisition and other start-up costs.
