TBRHSC Taking Precautionary Measures

Friday, December 23, 2011

Click to listen to this page using ReadPleaseDue to an Enteric Outbreak (symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea) on one unit, TBRHSC is taking precautionary measures to ensure that the health and protection of its patients and staff is maintained.

Visitors for patients on 2A (rooms 200 – 228) are being restricted to one partner in care per patient. The patient will be asked to identify that individual to their nurse. All visitors are asked to refrain from visiting if they have been in contact with or are caring for someone with enteric symptoms (as listed above) or if they are experiencing symptoms themselves. TBRHSC is discouraging children visiting at this time. Phone visits are encouraged.

In consultation with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, TBRHSC anticipates these restrictions to remain in effect for the next five days. This time frame could be extended based on circumstances.

We are asking any patients with out-patient appointments experiencing symptoms to call before they come. Discuss the option of rebooking or notify staff they are unwell to receive advice on precautions to take while accessing the facility if the option to postpone is not available. In addition, escorts should only accompany patients if medically necessary and limit the number of escorts to one person.

The Health Sciences Centre is working very closely with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. The public are reminded that hand washing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand rub is the best defense to prevent the spread of infection.

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre thanks the community for its co-operation. We appreciate the timing of this outbreak and hope to limit the impact over the holidays.
