Admission Criteria


  • 30 beds, average length of stay is 10 days.
  • 16-64 years of age, exceptions made in certain cases.
  • Serious and/or acute mental illness.
  • Medically stable.
  • Predominant problem is not related to a developmental handicap or an acquired brain injury.
  • Individual in-patient psychological services with adolescents ages 13-18 admitted on the paediatric unit.
  • Multidisciplinary Treatment Team includes:

  • Psychiatry and family practice medicine
  • Nursing
  • Psychology
  • Social work
  • Recreational therapy
  • Occpational therapy, dietetic and chaplaincy services are available by referral

 

Mental Health Assessment Team

 

  • Adjunct service to the Emergency Department for assessment and consultation of people who present with mental health problems.
  • Staffed by RNs, 24 hours each day
  • Not a distinct program to which people are referred, but a resource for the ER staff.


Outpatient Service

  • Medication clinics, e.g., mood stabilizers, clozaril, depot neuroleptics with physician referral.
  • Psychiatry and psychology follow-up as required.

  • Community based intensive case management program.
  • Focus is on providing rehabilitation, treatment and support to people with a serious mental illness.
  • Based on principles of psychosocial rehabilitation.
  • Physician referral not required.
  • Two teams, with:

  • Coordinator
  • Program assistant
  • Peer support specialist
  • Psychiatry
  • Nursing
  • Occupational therapy
  • Psychology
  • Therapeutic recreation
  • Social work

 

Community Treatment Order Service

  • A CTO Coordinator is available to provide education, consultation, support and advise about CTOs to physicians, families and agencies throughout the region.
  • A case manager is available to provide community support for people on CTOs in Thunder Bay.


Community Mental Health Program

  • Individual and group outpatient counselling, psychotherapy, psychoeducation and psychometric evaluation with adults (age 16 and over) with a serious mental illness.
  • Staffed by psychology.
  • Follows a brief model of psychotherapy focussed on current functioning difficulties.
  • Physician referral not required.


Shared Mental Health Care Service

  • Partnership with Fort William Family Health Network
  • Two counsellors are available on-site to see patients referred by a clinic physician.
  • Average of 4 sessions.
  • Psychiatric consultation available.
  • Targets mild to moderately ill in order to support the physician to continue to provide mental health care.
