Plan ahead

  • Use your head to save your feet!
  • Have all necessary equipment and supplies together before starting.
  • Plan activities to avoid extremes in temperatures (don't go outside for a summer walk at 1 p.m., try to shower in warm water, not hot).

If you must do an activity, ask yourself...

  • How can I do it more easily?
  • Who can help me do it?
  • Must I do it all at once?

Pace

Try to take rest periods 5-10 minutes every hour during the day.

  • Work at a moderate pace.
  • Rest before getting tired.
  • Keep that balance between rest and activity!

Organize a day's activity around rest and exercise periods.

  • Keep a balance between rest and activity.
  • Don't plan for totally inactive days, hoping to do twice as much the following day.

Learn to relax!

  • Try taking several deep breaths in a row.
  • Give yourself permission to relax!

Position

Easy work heights - eliminate excessive bending, stooping, reaching.

  • Try to eliminate tasks requiring repetitive or overhead arm motion.

Sit whenever possible.

  • Sitting uses 25% less energy than standing.

Use wheels to transport instead of lifting, pushing or pulling.

Work under good lighting and ventilation.

Maintain good posture in all positions.

  • ie: sitting, standing.
  • Change positions frequently.
  • Alternate between sitting and standing

Prioritize

Flexibility in work schedules and attitude!

  • There is always an option - tomorrow?  - help from others?
  • Respect pain and fatigue.

Don't let work/chores pile up.

In planning activities, ask yourself...

  • Is this task essential? Avoid unnecessary jobs.
  • Must it be done by me? Learn to delegate.
