ICU - Intensive Care Unit

Click to listen to this page using ReadPleaseThe Intensive Care Unit is specially designed for patient-focused care.

The Intensive Care Unit contains 22 rooms, all of which are private, and is located on the third floor of the hospital. Patients enjoy windows with a view outdoors in order to aid recovery and to decrease the sense of isolation. Sliding glass doors on the rooms enable clinicians to observe patients while allowing for privacy. Along with state-of-the-art technology, the spacious and comfortable décor assists the critical care team to provide the very best care possible.

Care is provided on Two Levels

Intensive Care: Critically ill adults and children who require comprehensive, specialized care by the members of the ICU CareTeam and continuous care including monitoring, assessment, evaluation and treatment of their life-threatening conditions and who are at risk of serious complications will be cared for in Intensive Care beds.

Intermediate Care: Patients who are not in a critical episode may not require all of the advanced monitoring and technology, but may need closer observation for potential complications and the quick response of the ICU Care Team will be cared for in Intermediate Care beds.

Caring for You

Caring for the Critical Patient

Care in the ICU is provided by a multidisciplinary ICU Care Team, which is composed of specially trained physicians, nurses, and other professionals. Each professional brings his or her particular expertise to the team, collaborating on a plan of care and treatment for each patient, based upon his or her individual needs and conditions.

Caring for the Family of Critical Patients

The ICU Care Team also provides support for families of critically ill patients. A large, comfortable waiting room equipped with a kitchen and washrooms is provided, as well as a separate consultation room for meeting in private with physicians, clergy and other care team members.

As an important part of our care, we try to make ourselves as accessible to you as possible, listen to your concerns and answer your questions. We consider you a team partner, and will communicate with you on your relative’s condition, changes and ongoing plans.
