 
Currently, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
has ten full-time Anesthetists in the Department and a large
pool of locums. We currently provide anesthetics for over
14,000 surgical cases/year and provide services's to ten
O.R. Suites. All surgical specialties are represented, except
transplant and open-heart cases. We provide anesthesia for
a large volume of major surgeries, including thoracic, vascular,
neurosurgery, and major spinal instrumentation. Thunder
Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre is also the referral
Trauma Centre for Northwestern Ontario. We have a significant
pediatric caseload, particularly in ENT and Oral/Dental
surgery.
The Obstetrical Service includes a 24-hour epidural practice,
which we are hoping to further develop. The Acute Pain Service
employs the use of epidurals on all surgical floors, as well
as PCA pumps. We have a daily Preoperative Consultation Clinic,
as well as an In-Patient Consultation Service.
Department members provide ventilatory care to patients and play a key role in administration and postoperative care. Our future plan is to have a fully closed ICU staffed by intensivists.
We are actively involved in teaching Family Medicine residents
and FRCP residents interested in a community based elective.
We also supervise paramedics, RT's and medical students on
a regular basis.
