 We
are a relatively young and dynamic Department that is looking
for both locum and full-time Anesthetists interested in promoting
excellence in our Department as we expand services in our
new acute care Health Sciences Centre. This is an ideal position
for new graduates interested in consolidating their skills
and having a significant role to play in the medical community
relatively early in their careers. We currently perform approximately
14,000 anesthetics annually for all services except transplant
and cardiac. We are a regional trauma center and provide high-risk
obstetric, pediatric and ICU services for a catchment area
of 250,000 covering all of Northwestern Ontario.
Our group is very cohesive and team oriented. Department
members work on an individual fee-for-service basis with a
pooling of stipends from teaching for use in Departmental
activities (book purchases, social events, etc). Work is distributed
in an equitable manner to all Department members regardless
of seniority. Vacation time is very flexible, provided ample
notification is given to the Chief of the Department. Staff
generally take 4 to 10 weeks of vacation time depending on
individual preferences.
Our Journal Club meets on a monthly basis and we have intermittent
Morbidity and Mortality Rounds. Departmental meetings also
take place on a monthly basis. Staff is encouraged to attend
CME conferences annually and report topics of interest to
the group. There are ample opportunities for speaking engagements
at local CME events, as well as workshops for ER docs and
other interested staff. An academic appointment can also be
obtained with McMaster Medical School, which is our affiliated
teaching hospital.
Applicants must have recent experience in all areas of anesthetic
care including pediatrics and obstetrics. Additional essential
requirements include FRCP(C) certification and Canadian citizenship
or landed immigrant status.
Thunder Bay provides a very challenging and rewarding practice
that we feel is not available at community hospitals closer
to the major referral centres. We also understand the importance
of lifestyle and family issues and are truly committed to
our principles of "Work Hard - Play Hard - Live Well!"
Thunder Bay is renowned for its outdoor recreation opportunities
and is truly a four season community. We have a symphony orchestra,
fine dining and most of the amenities of a big city without
the hassles. Our international airport also provides easy
daily access to major Canadian and US cities as well as charter
flights to the Caribbean. Anyone interested in obtaining more
detailed information is welcome to contact the Department
or our Community Development Officer and perhaps arrange a
site visit.
