Community Health Nursing at the Thunder Bay District Health
Unit provides health promotion activities and educational
support for a variety of cancer topics with emphasis on breast,
cervical and skin cancers, as well as lifestyle factors. The
Thunder Bay District Health Unit supports Early Detection
of Cancer services in Marathon, Nipigon/Red Rock, and Schreiber/Terrace
Bay.

but serves all of Greenstone. Cancer patients, cancer survivors,

In Marathon, a partnership with Wilson Memorial General Hospital
provides trained volunteers for clients in community or in
the hospital setting. Clients with palliative or chronic illness
are eligible for this service. Education is a cornerstone
of palliative care. In the community of Marathon, palliative
care educational presentations are done by the coordinator,
in French or English. Volunteers are recruited and trained
when needed. To inquire about the application process, please
contact the coordinator.

This program provides counseling for those dealing with anxiety,
depression, and who are coping with a diagnosis of cancer.
Grief counseling is also available. Clients may be referred
by a doctor, family member, and friend or through self-referral.
This service is free of charge.

In Terrace Bay, the McCausland hospital provides a Resource
centre and office space to house the program, as well as the
guidance and assistance of an interdisciplinary palliative
care committee. This committee oversees community initiatives
as well as the volunteer visiting program. Committee members:
Danielle Boulianne, Coordinator, Eleanor Gould, John Sovereign,
Michelle Strong, Joan Clark.
Support in home, hospital and long term care facilities is
available in Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Jackfish, Rossport and
Pays Plat. After an assessment by the coordinator, a volunteer
is assigned to enhance quality of life for the client and
assist the family at this stressful time. All services are
provided at no cost to client and family.
