TBayTel Tamarack House is our lodge for regional cancer patients.
It spans the entire top floor of the Medical Centre, only
metres from the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
(TBRHSC).
It encompasses more than 12,000 square feet, with comfortable
lounges, an activity room, full kitchen, and twenty rooms
with 40 double beds and private washrooms, including two barrier
free rooms for patients in wheelchairs.
More than one-third of the approximately 1,500 new cancer
patients treated each year at TBRHSC come from regional communities
in Northwestern Ontario. Patients travel from as far away
as Hearst and White River to the east, and as far west as
the Manitoba border. We also receive patients from many northern,
remote, and fly-in communities. Many come for complex radiation
therapy that requires stays in the community for up to eight
weeks at a time. Tamarack House is a ‘home away from
home’ for these patients and their families. TBayTel
Tamarack House is open to all regional cancer patients at
no cost.
This new lodge was built in 2004, replacing Amethyst House,
our 30-year-old former lodge located at the old site. TBayTel
Tamarack House has twice the square footage, a 24 hour a day,
7 day a week schedule, a brilliant view, and quick access
to treatment for patients.
The TBayTel Tamarack House provides many comforts of home
for the regional patients and families using the cancer centre.
There are laundry facilities, internet access, a full kitchen
with food storage areas (patients have the option of bringing
food from home), planned activities and a barbeque and balcony,
all in a relaxing and bright atmosphere. The facility provides
not only a home base for physical treatment, but emotional
and spiritual supports for patients and families.
The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, through
the Regional Cancer Program, has partnered with the Northern
Cancer Research Foundation (NCRF) on TBayTel Tamarack House.
The NCRF, as the sole fundraising arm of the cancer program,
continually works to raise funds to help equip and furnish
the new lodge.
