The
Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Department of
Dentistry provides a broad range of dental services for patients
who are unable to be treated in a private dental office setting.
They require a general anaesthetic or deep sedation in an
operating room environment, because of their age, mental or
medical health, and the extent of their treatment.
These patients include infants and young children needing
extensive restorative and/or surgical procedures to treat the damage
done by [ECC] Early Childhood Caries (tooth decay), cognitively impaired
or developmentally challenged individuals, older adults and the frail elderly,
with periodontal disease or extensive root caries who would be extremely
difficult if not impossible to treat without hospital dentistry.
Our
Dental Staff includes qualified general practitioners with
a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD (Doctor of Dental
Medicine) degrees, as well as specialists in Paedodontics
(Children's Dentistry) and Periodontics (gums, roots and their
supporting structures). We also work closely with Oral & Maxillo-Facial
Surgeons.
We provide continuing in-service professional education sessions
for TBRHSC staff in Paediatrics (children's care), Oral Gerontology
(care of the elderly), and Oncology (cancer care). Patient
information booklets and oral health awareness materials are
also made available for patients and their families.
Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre is also pleased
to partner with Your
Teeth for a Lifetime Foundation in the promotion of dental
heatlh and well being.
