A mammogram is an x-ray image of breast tissue.

Preparation

  • Ideally book your mammogram 5-7 days after cessation of menses when breasts are less tender.
  • Do not use deodorants or dusting powders due to the aluminum in these products. You will be asked to wash these off.
  • Children may not be left unattended in the Waiting Room.

Procedure

  • The procedure takes approximately one half hour.
  • You will be asked to provide a history regarding your own breast health and family history of breast disease. An information sheet will be filled out.
  • The technologist will position the breast on a film and compress firmly with a plastic paddle.
  • The breast is held for only a few seconds.
  • This may feel uncomfortable.
  • Two films on each breast are done. After viewing these films, special views may be requested by the Radiologist.

After the Test

  • If you have not received your results within 10 days, call your doctor.
  • A follow-up mammogram may be recommended by the Radiologist 3-6 months after the exam.
  • An ultrasound of the breast may also be ordered.
