Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Emergency Services consists of a number of programs and services which focus on pre-hospital, community and hospital (ie. Emergency Department) care of patients requiring immediate medical assistance with acute health care problems.

 

Services within the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre


  • Emergency Services
  • Emergency Department
    The emergency department is staffed by emergency physicians and nurses with advanced education and training. Other members of the Emergency Care Team include a nurse practitioner, clinical educator, utilization coordinators, social workers, trauma coordinator, a mental health assessment team, as well as support workers and clerks. The department strives to provide expert, compassionate care to those in need of our assistance.

 

 


Base Hospital Program


Base Hospital Program provides training, continuing medical education, medical direction and quality management of land ambulance paramedics in basic and advanced life support procedures including:

  • Automated External Defibrillation
  • Symptom Relief (Administration of ASA, Epinephrine, Glucagon, Ventolin & Nitro)
  • Intubation, IV Cannulation, Medication administration, full ACLS
  • Ontario Pre-Hospital Advanced Life Support Study (OPALS)
  • Firefighter Defibrillation
  • Oversight of Public Access Defibrillation Program for continuity of care

 

CritiCall Program


  • One-Number-To-Call Program which serves physicians in Ontario
  • Links physicians with appropriate medical resources to manage patients in crisis
  • Central Bed and Emergency Registry for Thunder Bay

 

Northwest Emergency Services Network


The Northwest Ontario Emergency Services Network has been established to identify and address local and regional emergency services issues.

 

Trauma Program


Thunder Bay Regional Hospital is one of 11 designated Trauma Centers in Ontario. A dedicated Trauma Team is ready to respond to any patient arriving in the Emergency Department with serious injury.

 

Upsala Nursing Station


  • The Upsala Nursing Station has served residents and visitors in the Upsala area since April 1993. Care is provided by registered nurses and includes:
  • Emergency Intervention
  • Home Nursing Visits
  • Non Urgent Ambulatory Care
  • Public Health Education
