Smoking Cessation Program

Click to listen to this page using ReadPleasedr m morrisThe smoking cessation “coach” will work with pregnant women or family members who smoke to design a “quit” plan to suit their needs. The patient sets their own QUIT DATE, usually within 30 days of their first appointment. Planning involves having the smoker look at their smoking behaviour (their triggers and cues) and decide on how to change when their QUIT DATE comes.

Smokers have taught themselves how to smoke... they have to teach themselves how NOT to smoke. The patient is provided with some take-home materials to assist them with their planning.

Medications to assist smokers with the withdrawal from smoking their nicotine are also discussed. For most smokers going cold turkey is very difficult. Recommendations are usually offered for use of medications if the patient cannot quit with non-pharmocological methods. This is in accordance with Clinical Practice Guidelines.

Support is provided in a non-judgemental way through a specialized assessment, identifying problem solving skills, and ongoing encouragement to move at your best pace. Post partum follow-up is also provided.
