Paediatrics
is located on the first level of the Thunder Bay Regional
Health Sciences Centre. There are a number of features that
make this area of care special. First, the placement of the
unit is significant since it is positioned between Oncology
and Maternal
Child to enable care-givers from those areas with related
specialties to meet the needs of the young people in the unit.
Another feature of healthcare in this area is the focus on
telehealth. Many consultations are conducted with patients
and specialists using technology to connect with other specialists
to observe a patient face-to-face and use accompanying data
to assess and recommend treatment.
As well, a lot of attention has gone into the décor
of the environment to permit as much comfort as possible to
patients. The ceiling over the nursing station is unique as
it is wired with fibre optics. In lower light conditions the
ceiling has the appearance of being outside looking into a
starlit evening sky. This is one of the many “wow”
features in the Health Sciences Centre.
The Paediatrics department of Thunder Bay Regional Health
Sciences Centre provides both inpatient and outpatient services
for children from infancy up to 17 years in a family-centered
environment. TBRHSC is also please to offer the services of
a Child Life Specialist.
Child Life Specialist
The role of the child
life specialist is to assist children and their families
to cope with the effects of hospitalization. Through opportunities
for appropriate developmental play, normalized life events,
age appropriate preparation and supportive relationships,
the life specialist strives to provide a positive hospital
experience for you and your child.
