Rehabilitation
Services is a dynamic area at Thunder Bay Regional Health
Sciences Centre that provides assessment and treatment to
a variety of inpatients and outpatients. The primary goal
of treatment is to improve the patient’s level of function
to his or her maximum ability.
Therapists are designated to the following types of patients:
- Cardiorespiratory: Chest physio for
patients who are post-op, intubated or with any other respiratory
problem.
- Inpatient and Outpatient Orthopaedics:
Assessment and treatment of post-operative hip, knee, shoulder
and elbow patients as well as those with fractures and other
injuries.
- Medical Therapy for a variety of medical
conditions as well as the frail elderly and failure to cope
populations. Therapists of this population are very involved
in discharge decisions.
- Neuro: Therapy for patients with neurogical
involvement including CVA, ABI and spinal cord injury.
- Return to Work: On-site treatment for
staff who have been injured.
- Inpatient Cardiac: Therapy and teaching
for patients with cardiac involvement.
- Outpatient Cardiac: Exercise class and
teaching for outpatients post-cardiac incident.
- Outpatient Hand Clinic: Assessment and
treatment of post-surgical hand, elbow and shoulder patients
as well as amputations, fractures and other injuries.
- Float Coverage for all programs offered
at both sites.
Referrals from Emergency and Psychiatry are primarily responded to by the medical therapists – both PT and OT.
- Medical/Surgical/Neuro/Paeds: Individual
assessment and therapy for patients in the areas of ADL
and cognition. Can also be involved in patient mobility
and strengthening. OT is an important piece in discharge
planning.
- Psychiatry: Assessment and treatment
of patients with psychiatric disorders. The focus is on
function and assisting them with their transfer back to
the community.
- Outpatient Hand Clinic: Assessment and
treatment of hand and upper limb injuries. Works in conjunction with PT and orthopaedic surgeons.
- Psychiatry: Provides therapeutic leisure
activities for those in hospital and works with patients to establish an active lifestyle upon discharge.
- Medical/Neuro: Assessment and treatment
of swallowing and communication disorders.
