Total Hip Arthroplasty - Guidelines on Activities - Dr. Cullinan

Click to listen to this page using ReadPleaseThe following list is a set of guidelines designed and approved by your surgeon to help you following your Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA).

 

If you have any concerns regarding other activities please consult your surgeon.

 

Activity
Time (weeks after surgery)
Progress walking to 2 canes After 2 weeks if cemented, you can do touch toe weight bearing with walker/crutches - 6 weeks if uncemented.
Drive a car Ask surgeon, but not for at least 6 weeks.
Lying on side After 6 weeks and must use pillow.
Resume sexual activities After 6 weeks and if comfortable, except no hip bending greater than 90°.
Sit at bottom of bath tub Never
Cut toenails Never
Put on shoes and socks without aid Never
Swim After 3 months.
Ride a stationary bicycle with raised seat After 6 weeks and only following specific instruction from your surgeon.
Ride a regular bicycle After 12 weeks.
Ballroom dancing When ambulating without crutches.
Golfing After 3 months.
Travelling in an airplane After 12 weeks.

 

Some activities MAY NOT BE recommended and it is advisable to check with your surgeon before you perform other activities. Examples are: any high impact sports such as horseback riding, court sports (volleyball, basketball, racquet sports), yoga, gardening, bowling.

 

Some activities are NEVER recommended. Some examples are: high impact sports, jogging, tennis, skiing, kneeling, crawling, climbing ladders, bending past 90 degrees, crossing operated leg over unoperated leg or lifting greater than 25-50 pounds.
