Completion
of the 37-bed Nipigon District Memorial Hospital in 1992 brought
health care under one roof in Nipigon. Extended care, chronic
care, acute care, and respite beds are all available for the
6,000 people served by the hospital’s catchment Area.
Nursing staff provide a number of specialty services: in-patient, chronic care, out-patient and Emergency services. General x-rays, pyelograms, and ultrasound are performed regularly within the Diagnostic Imaging Services Department in order to detect injuries and diagnose diseases. Additionally, teleradiology was implemented in the Fall of 2002. Routine clinical chemistry testing and hematology, immunohaematology, microbiology and ECG testing are performed in the laboratory to aid in diagnosing and monitoring a patient's condition. We also provide Chemotherapy Services, Video Consults and Diabetic Counseling Services. The Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy departments supply both inpatient and outpatient services. An office of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit provides community health care. A Lifeline emergency response system, foot care clinic, Meals on Wheels, and Visiting program are all new to hospital. Video teleconferencing facilities are available to health care professionals at theNipigon District Memorial Hospital.
The community’s Medical Clinic is located on the same site at the hospital as well as the Ambulance Facility.
Elsewhere in community, the North of Superior Program provides mental health services and a dentist, a chiropractor and an occupational therapist maintain practices.
Twenty-three part-time and full-time Paramedics provide ambulance services to an area, which runs from Ouimet Canyon to Gravel River in the east and Jellico in the north.
